Loralai Kruid Wins Leavenworth County Spelling Bee!

Congratulations to 8th grader Loralai Kruid who took the top spot and the opportunity to advance to the Kansas State Spelling Bee held in Hays, Kansas on March 3.  Loralai competed at the county level representing her class in 5th grade, 6th grade and 8th grade.  This year, rhododendron, geranium, bonsai, and eureka were some of the words that she had to spell correctly to advance.  We wish her the best of luck as she represents PRMS and Leavenworth County at the State Bee in March!

USD 449 Patrons,

I want to take this opportunity to reach out to you and let you know about some of the work our staff has undertaken since my arrival in July.  Through the course of gathering data, our staff has identified a goal that will guide our actions and communication with you, our patrons and community.  That goal is:

To establish and maintain a partnership among staff, students, families, and our community that enhances student learning opportunities.

In order to obtain baseline data, you might recall that in December we provided a school climate survey to every family in the district.  Since that time, our staff has reviewed your responses for each building and across the district.  Your feedback is very important to us, and we are already making plans to improve our communication with you.  We believe  that a strong school/home partnership is key to student success.  In USD 449, our relationship with you, our community, is a priority.

I encourage you to stay up-to-date on district events and activities by continuing to access the Twitter feed on our webpage, You can also access information by liking the district’s Facebook page, USD #449.

Please know that your continued support is critical to USD 449 in providing our students with the best in learning opportunities!

Superintendent, Easton USD 449

The Easton USD 449 school community has many distinct characteristics all unto itself.  I have always found that the people, and our students, are our greatest asset.  In this, my inaugural campaign as a school superintendent, we will no doubt encounter challenges that will test our resolve.  However, the beauty of working with the students of our community is that we will also see state and national success in areas ranging from Agriculture Education and Future Business Leaders of America to athletic and academic competitions like Battle of the Brains.  The students of our community inspire me with their drive, their citizenship, and their well-rounded nature.

The 2017-2018 school year is sure to be marked by substantive change.  Accompanying my transition to the superintendency are Mrs. Amanda Brimer and Mr. Lucas Siebenmorgen. Mrs. Brimer will become the Pleasant Ridge Elementary School principal, and Mr. Siebenmorgen will assume the role of principal at Pleasant Ridge Middle School.  While Mr. Andy Metsker will remain in his post as principal of Pleasant Ridge High School, he will do so with added responsibilities as the district is, for the first time in a decade, foregoing an assistant principal/activities director.  Mr. Mike Koontz, high school PE teacher, will fill a part-time activities director role.

I am excited about the direction our district is taking with respect to Career and Technical Education.  Our students have opportunities to plan and prepare for their career in a wide range of fields of interest.  Pleasant Ridge middle and high school students are actively engaged in planning for their future and our schools are providing them with the programs necessary to seamlessly turn high school coursework into a successful transition to college and career.  As part of this effort, our Board of Education has shown their support through a major remodel of the vocational building. The Board has also made a significant commitment to technology by providing our students with the tools they need to excel in today’s competitive marketplace.

I look forward to leading a district with which I have so much personal history, and I am confident that we will work together to maximize learning opportunities for all students!  I look forward to an exciting school year, and I am anxious to see what 2017-2018 has in store for us!

It is a new day in Kansas education.

With the input of more than 2,000 Kansans, the Kansas State Board of Education has set a new Vision for Kansas education where “Kansas leads the world in the success of each student.”

Kansans are demanding higher standards in academic skills, as well as employability and citizenship skills, and the need to move away from a “one-size-fits-all” system that relies exclusively on state assessments from No Child Left Behind. This new vision for education calls for a more student-focused system that provides support and resources for individual success and will require everyone to work together to make it a reality.

Kansans have never backed down from a challenge and certainly not where our children are concerned.

With your support, Kansans Can!
