Spotlight on Career and Technical Education Programs at Pleasant Ridge High School

Justin Langley, a junior at Pleasant Ridge High School, is completing his first year in the Electrical Technology program at Highland Community College Technical Center (HCCTC) in Atchison. Recently, Justin competed in the SkillsUSA competition in Hutchinson, Kansas. Justin was awarded first in Industrial Motor Controls and he has qualified to participate in the National contest in Louisville, Kentucky in June.

Justin has stated he has learned a great deal of about electricity and electrical systems during his first year in the program at HCCTC. He has worked on motor controls and commercial and residential wiring. The students in the program in Atchison have worked on a house being built in Troy, Kansas. They also have individual projects they are responsible for accomplishing while in the shop in Atchison, including wiring a cabinet and bending conduit, as well as taking code tests.

While Justin still has one more year of high school to complete before he can begin working full-time, he is already making plans for what he wants to do after graduation, which includes joining a union, working his way through an apprenticeship and then becoming a journeyman.

As part of the Career and Technical Education program in the school district, Justin will be a completer in the Power, Structural and Technical Systems. He has, as he stated, “learned a ton” while at HCCTC, and is another example of Pleasant Ridge High School students taking advantage of the programs, off campus, in Atchison to prepare themselves for the world of work, after graduation.

We look forward to hearing how Justin does in Louisville and will report the success he has in that competition, as well as his continued outstanding work at HCCTC.
